WTM decoration & boma
WTM decoration & boma
May 2026In 2017, after finishing a solo exhibition at Archive Bomm, I participated in an exhibition at Doosan Gallery New York and stayed in the city for three months. As a stranger visiting the United States and a major Western metropolis for the first time, I fully indulged in a sense of freedom. Although I had generally viewed the culture of the First World—the U.S.—with cynicism, I enjoyed the diversity reflecting a directness devoid of complexes, feeling both envy and pleasure at the thought, "So this is the First World." One day, watching the countless white men passing by on the streets, in cafés, restaurants, and bars, I felt a desire to taxidermize them as vases, and left behind several drawings capturing that thought. (This idea later evolved into the Beige Men Vase series, presented several years later at my solo exhibition at Cava Life in 2020.)
Upon returning to Korea, I found it difficult to continue my artistic practice under the name fldjf studio, and fell into a slump. It felt as though fldjf studio's digital work, and the momentum behind it, had lost their anchor within me. I frequented my studio and made various attempts, but for about a year, I was unable to produce any work. Then, after a year had passed, I happened to touch some air-dry clay in the studio, and felt a profound sense of welcome as I watched shapes change and forms emerge through the pressure and touch of my hands. In a similar vein to clay, my practice at the time turned toward non-visual senses, and this was the point at which I began exploring smell. In that I could simply inhale something and sense it, be moved by it, feel it — scent came to me as a remarkably special language of healing (much as it has already long served as a tool of healing, and a form of ritual, across many different fields).
Taking this as a turning point, I began exploring gesture and material-sense through small substances. Through the process of making small things out of clay and searching for scents, I was able to elevate into the dimension of material work things that had existed continuously within my earlier fldjf studio practice but that I hadn't known how to handle — drawings, small fragments, melodies, installations, certain paintings — fragile, tangible works that had existed almost like mere decoration. This became both an exploration and a turning point through which I could safeguard my own intuition toward things that are "invisible." At the time, I didn't know exactly what change was occurring, but looking back now, I understand this process as the moment I finally emerged from the cradle in which I had handled the world and materials defensively. While searching for a language to name this artistic practice, I remembered the white men I had wanted to preserve as vases, and named it White Men Decoration & boma.
WTM decoration & boma began with clay jewelry, objects, and small sculptures, and eventually expanded into resin jewelry — a collection that was even carried by W Concept. This was less an actual business venture than an experiment in how far a "fake" could be made real. I also created events to sell or gift clay jewelry — which is inherently vulnerable to water and force — because I wanted to see how the work, or the value assumed by it, would be distributed and exchanged. From then on, the body of work involving scent, form, volume, and texture proceeded under the name wtm deco & boma, and was shown across various exhibitions starting with the solo exhibition Rebecca Son and the Cost (2019, Gallery SP).
The practice of WTM decoration & boma became the foundation from which I could confidently present substantial works, and this led into the Sophie Etulips Xylang Co. project beginning in 2020, extending into marble patterns, paintings, decorations, and temporary furniture-scale pieces. (These furniture-scale works, in turn, intersect with the practice of fldjf material suite, previously explored under fldjf studio.) Through this process, my substantial practices came to appear in and permeate exhibition and installation sites without any sense of guilt, evolving into a way of confidently occupying their own roles and titles, and I began to accept, without censorship, the synesthetic sensibility that had always been latent within me.
By 2022, WTM decoration & boma transitioned into the identity of a female painter named Boma Pak (using both lower and upper case), leading to the exhibition Boma Pak: Mercy, Paintings and Matters 19xx–2022 (2022, YPC Space). The olfactive work, meanwhile, expanded further into the service of Maatter. Even after projects and exhibitions conclude, the works and the remnants of installations continue their existence through the Afterwards or Inclusions series.
