Thoughts) Today’s Olfactive Sketch on ...

As I've gotten more skilled at my olfactory practice and at blending scents, it's genuinely interesting and fascinating how the results end up combining with some imagination of mine, or with mental images and memories. Even when the subject is figurative, it doesn't feel like reproducing something so much as it feels like drawing an abstract form, or painting — mixing colors and making some kind of image out of that paint.

As I've grown more comfortable working with this medium, whenever I want to express something specific, some figurative subject, I practice by blending scents. When I draw something, or make something visual, I need a kind of justification, a logic — a vicious defense mechanism of mine! Why did I end up this way? What I can approach visually, it seems, is either something that dissolves into abstraction, or something that is purposive within the logic and practice of some world.

When I imagine something, I sense its scent, or sometimes I suddenly sense a scent that doesn't exist, for no reason at all. I call this — half-jokingly — a phantom sense of smell (olfactory imagination/hyperphantasia, or phantosmia), and it's only recently that I learned most people don't experience this. Around the same time, the term "synesthete" happened to appear often in the media, and that's how I came to realize I was one myself. Anyway, that's how it is… The other day — ah! — it suddenly occurred to me that I wanted to express the Hermitage Museum through scent.

Practicing today, for the Hermitage's emerald-green exterior walls, I reached straight for palo santo — two drops. The way one picks paint colors without hesitation while painting — right after, one drop of eucalyptus, one drop of pink pepper... Surprisingly? — this is the first time I've tried expressing a personal, specific object from memory through scent. Which is why I've ended up with so many words about it.
