On The Afterwards of Blue Rose
030 Blue Rose, unveiled last spring at Maatter through a collaboration with Permanent Vacation, is a scent I spent all last winter deeply absorbed in, wanted to express, in fragrance, the "Blue Rose," a fantasy I love and am captivated by. The collaboration with PV came about through one of those fateful currents, this way and that.
I like the phrase "wanted to express" in the sentence above. That's because a direct expression like this is almost impossible in the language of art, and because directness is a language I don't want to use in visual language, either. "Blue Rose" has carried through various practices of mine since undergrad, and at my 2023 solo exhibition Ritual of Matter at Leeum Museum of Art, I made a fragrance themed on a "sponge blue rose artificial flower" I'd picked up off the street back in 2010. I had this scent diffuse throughout the exhibition space, but the lobby hall connected to the exhibition space had a clause restricting fragrance, so it couldn't fully assert itself there. It was composed of notes matched to a tone of "blue," "company," "masculinity," while the nuance of rose came through as something floral yet cold, almost like men’s toner scent. (For reference, rose's note is a cold, high-pitched floral scent. Rose's "passion" could be said to be something deeply masculine…)
Anyway, under the name 030 Blue Rose, it was first unveiled in Melbourne in collaboration with PV, bottled and released there. Since I had promised PV's store an exclusive pre-release, and their stock has since almost sold out, I began selling it on Maatter's website as well a few days ago. Those who had heard about this scent and were waiting for it placed their orders.
Unlike the "sponge blue rose artificial flower," when I suddenly wanted to express Blue Rose through scent that winter, I first imagined a dark, deep, velvety navy-blue Blue Rose. I blended intuitively, mixing things like galbanum, rose absolute, frankincense, and patchouli. But this direction felt too heavy and clichéd, so I paused. Then one day I saw an image of a fountain, its water droplets sparkling, and that sparkling fountain and a sky-blue rose flickered into my mind. Adjusting the recipe I'd set aside, I carved the scent forward, working through some fantastical space where a sparkling freshness and a suede-like, pale Blue Rose bloomed abundantly.
The countless droplets scattered by the fo
untain's spray touching my skin and then quickly vanishing, slipping away — floating in a garden where Blue Rose blooms, resting there forever, the horizon blurring hazily into the sky — a Celestial Blue, perhaps a scene from some heaven, a longing for something I've never experienced.
Someone left a review: "For me, blue usually brings up something dark and melancholic, but this blue has its own comfort. I think I understand now why you used the words 'eternal rest.' this scent is more wonderful than words can capture." Reading that was thrilling. What was it that connected her to what I'd written — "eternal rest" — through the medium of this scent, this Blue Rose? I always find this endlessly fascinating and joyful.
Following the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia, my next personal scent practice is "Knees Down" (무릎 꿇다). I'll begin with frankincense and vetiver. Through Maatter, meanwhile… I'm still not entirely sure what distinguishes the two, but I'm working on the Eros Collection.
