Ritual of Matter (at Leeum)

25 July - 24 December 2023

Leeum Museum of Art

Leeum Museum of Art presents Ritual of Matter, a work by Boma Pak (b. 1988). Spanning various media and multiple artistic identities, Pak navigates and advocates for vulnerability of material, as well as marginalized and/or feminine beings. For this project, Pak transforms the lobby’s ROOM into a reception area of a fictitious company Sophie Etulips Xylang Co.,

Here, large glass facades and marble, frequently used in skyscrapers of large corporations, are replaced with light and frivolous materials while portraits of the executives are mere silhouettes, unnamed and faceless. The ritual of matter led by sporadic array of objects, faint vibration across the wall, a fading scent and ambiguous sounds mourns repressed beings and celebrates the fullness of ephemerality. This ritual with a twist undermines the society’s value system and challenges ocularcentrism and devotion to permanence that lies underneath the institutional practices.

Performance by Boma Pak

Opera: Sky Blue Canon Infinitus

28 (Fri), 29 (Sat) July, 2023

18:30-19:30

Leeum Museum of Art Lobby

Boma Pak’s Ritual of Matter stages a reception area of a fictitious company Sophie Etulips Xylang Co., at the lobby’s ROOM, Leeum Museum of Art. Written and directed by Pak, Opera: Sky Blue Canon Infinitus announces the departure of the “ritual of matter” and extends the celebration of the material presence into the lobby. The performance saturates the lobby with the passion mediated by the performers, sounds that mourn repressed beings, and the presence of the museum caretakers, turning the space into a stage where the perpetual and ephemeral switch places, interweave, and reconcile.

Visitors are encouraged to read the script written by Pak before the performance. The script, which will be released on the opening of Ritual of Matter, unfolds a narrative that spans the conception and installation of the exhibition, the performance, and the project’s termination. We invite you to picture the sky, the museum, and the beings in between while reading the script, which operates as a prototype of what will take place, like a novel on which movies are potentially based.

Boma Pak : Mercy : Paintings and Matters 19XX-2022

2022. 8. 21-9. 10
YPC SPACE, Seoul, Korea.

Curated by Jiwon Yu
In collaboration with YPC SPACE

Boma Pak - Mercy : Paintings and Matters 19XX-2022 at YPC Space (Seoul, Korea) is the artist's solo exhibition that introduces for the first time her painting series through a new artistic identity, 'Boma Pak.' 'Boma Pak', whose exact year of activity is unknown, is presumed to be a female Asian artist, presents a group of monochromic color paintings that verifies in repetition. This line of work came from a realization that the sky the artist used to capture in digital image and medium are not inherently different from the oil paintings’ planes that replicate the digital images. This exhibition suggests a vision for a reconciliation between the spirit (immaterial) and material. The picture planes with line and color, pattern and glittery materials leap forward to the field where Moment/ Eternity, Reality/ Emotion and Original/ Imitation merge.

사라지는 하루 a day as a disappearance

2022
published by Rasun Press

A Day as a Disappearance begins its story with the cover itself. A cup standing on a table tips over for no discernible reason, and the water it held spills out. In the mysterious instant when light glints across the surface of a drop of water, we enter the world inside that droplet. Inside it, strange, curious, and captivating forms drift about, drawing near to us and then receding again. This book begins in the dimness of dawn, moves through the bright white of midday, and continues on into the deep darkness of midnight — holding within it the span of a single day, and repeating it.

A Day as a Disappearance is a story about forms that are born and vanish within a single day — unknown beings. There are strange beings that do not take familiar shapes like the circle, the triangle, or the square — beings that are ceaselessly born and disappear, living out their own lives independent of us. This book invites us to welcome such beings, and to imagine ways of living alongside them.

This exhibition, prepared to mark the opening of Rasun Library, reconstructs A Day as a Disappearance in the form of an exhibition. The forms once bound within the temporality of the book's space now settle again within the exhibition space, lingering for a moment within the flow of time in the world we inhabit.

Rasun Library is a place where technical reproductions dwell for a while. Through objects caught in a spiral motion, it imagines what lies outside of reality.

Boma Pak's solo exhibition, Sophie Etulips Xylang Co., consolidates the multiple identities the artist has unfolded since 2013 into a fictional company called Sophie Etulips Xylang Co., unfolding variable materials, non-linear narratives, and feminine language and sensibility — all things excluded by binary thinking and the values that capitalism prioritizes. Through identities such as fldjf studio, WTM deco & boma, and dancer qhak, Boma Pak has, until now, hinted at some company operating behind the scenes — temporarily occupying high-rise buildings that condense the weight of massive capital, and producing sculptures, objects, fragrances, sounds, and ornaments. Among the traces of events that have given bodies to beings uncaptured by prescriptive language and amplified vibrations of sensation, Sophie Etulips Xylang Co., now launches.

Sophie Etulips Xylang Co., unveils its official website. This web presentation, which introduces the company progressively in a set sequence, unfolds the logic of an inverted world across a total of eleven menus — through diverse media including photography, digital images, and sound — spanning an ironic founding myth and corporate history, techniques of handling light, and a fragmented body and shadow-haunted portrait of the company's owner and executive board. This company, rather than reigning over and controlling material, learns from its flow; the lowest-ranking staff member who directly touches every corner of the building rises instead to become the true owner of the company, and the combination of material fragments itself constitutes the substance of the executive board. Built not on solid concrete floors and pillars but on transparent, fragmented images, this company is absent in the sense that it lacks a profit structure and a physical building — yet the excessive spectrum of sensation testifies that it undeniably exists. In doing so, it fractures the hierarchy between what distrustful reason claims to be "real" and dismisses as "fake," between what is recognized as having exchange value in the market economy and what is not — allowing us, at last, to encounter the material excluded by dominant values. — Jiwon Yu
