The Desire to Disappear, Glitterings in the Eyes
The Desire to Disappear,
Glitterings in the Eyes
In my undergraduate years, I worked and explored under many different motivations. Among them, the one that stayed with me most, the one that felt most decisive, was the desire to disappear. That inevitably led me to wonder — how do I want to disappear? The way I wanted to disappear was an image of my body shattering into fragments of light. I imagined that filling my eyes with glitter powder might make that possible. It was funny to me that the act felt like both a self-deception and, clearly, not one at all — this is a matter of sight, of visual sense. It moved me quite a bit, but it would have hurt too much, and it was too dangerous, so I never actually did it.
If you look closely enough at sweat beaded on the surface of skin catching the light, you can see a rainbow-colored spectrum floating on that oil.
At the time, I also imagined some state, or object, in which everything shone completely, in every direction, all at once — and I kept pursuing experiments and inquiries to realize it. It's a state that remains valid in my practice even now. It's something like a mirror ball — impossible to realize in reality, or, if I had to name the closest thing, I came to understand it as something like "lighting." Or else I kept imagining that it might be possible in metaphysics, or in some other dimension. Being able to imagine this state at all is, in itself, a great comfort to me.
So... what I'm talking about is something like a state where nothing casts a shadow.
It took quite a while to accept that this is materially impossible in reality. I was defensive and skeptical toward material for a very long time. I suppose I should call it love-hate. Because what's visible, and matter itself, is limited. That's how narrow I was.
I believe this motivation and this line of thought were later appropriated, in various forms, across my practice — into the Sex Company, the many suns reflected in the windows of the building facade where that company supposedly stands, the workings of fldjf studio, dancer qhak, her dress, Mijeongee, Receptionist R, all of these characters. Even Rebercca Son. Synesthesia, all of that…?
For all these reasons, and others… I've also been thinking, at the same time, about my love for glitter makeup, all kinds of shining fashion and accessories, and things considered crude. I don't understand it. Why is the beauty and aesthetic of glittering eyeshadow, of dusting the body in glitter powder for a glossy shine, so often seen as childish and cheap. A lot of people seem to see it that way.
Are you afraid of disappearing?
Someone who put a bunch of glitter in their eyes, 2011
