Bomas Deuler & BCGM

Bomas Deuler appeared in 2020. It was during COVID, and I was spending overwhelmingly more time than usual confined to my home and studio — for some reason, I suddenly felt the urge to make pencil drawings, and I worked on rendering abstract forms, drawing them out and giving them volume. The forms combined abstract shapes, chance, and contextual traces of events that I had been exploring for some time, and I remember this as the first work in which I gave them volume. As if bulging outward — if I had to name the closest analogue, it would be something like foam wallpaper stamped with a sponge into relief, imitating a stone pattern and giving it volume so that the pattern looks as though it were made of real bricks.

There were quite a number of these drawings, and I decided to hold an online exhibition. That was when Bomas Deuler appeared. He is a German-born gallerist, and he appeared in a dream. He appeared in my dream and told me he would sell my work. "My gallery doesn't exist in the real world, but I am the head curator and gallerist of BCGM. And I am here to sell your work…"

Bomas Deuler, meanwhile, appears everywhere. This is because he cannot be separated from Receptionist R. In 2022, Bomas Deuler once appeared covered in bruises.

Bomas Deuler는 2020년에 나타났습니다. 당시는 코비드 상황이었고, 집과 작업실에만 머무는 시간이 압도적으로 많았는데, 어떤 연유에서인지 저는 갑자기 연필 드로잉을 하고 싶었고, 추상적인 형태들을 그려나가며 여기에 양감을 부여하는 방식으로 데생 작업을 진행했습니다. 형태들은 이전부터 탐구해온 어떤 추상적 형태, 우연, 사건의 맥락이 혼합된 내용이었는데, 이들에 처음으로 양감을 부여한 작업으로 기억합니다. 마치 튀어나와 보이는 것처럼 — 가장 유사한 상태를 꼽자면, 돌 패턴을 모사하고 이 패턴이 마치 진짜 벽돌인 듯 양감을 주어 스펀지로 입체적으로 찍어낸 폼 벽지 같은 것입니다.

이 드로잉은 수가 꽤 되어, 저는 온라인에서 전시를 하기로 합니다. 이때 Bomas Deuler가 나타났습니다. 그는 독일 태생의 갤러리스트인데, 꿈속에 나타났습니다. 꿈에 나타나서, 제 작업을 팔아주겠다고 했습니다. "나의 갤러리는 현실 세계에는 없지만, 나는 BCGM의 헤드 큐레이터이자 갤러리스트다. 그리고 나는 너의 작업을 팔아주기 위해…"
